A screenplay with thought-out characters, interesting dialogues and unexpected plot twists is the basis of any movie, TV series, cartoon or computer game. This basis is created by a screenwriter, a representative of a very interesting, creative and promising profession.
The task of the screenwriter is not just to compose plot twists, but also to act as a dramatist, that is, to think through the characters of the characters, to prescribe their monologues and dialogues. He is required to describe the place where the action takes place, the setting and other details that help reveal the plot and set the accents. Work is complicated by the fact that the author is not possible to explain in text the motives of the deeds that are committed by the characters, so very important logical narration, the accuracy of the replicas of the characters, consistent with their behavior to the characters.
Due to the fact that the number of films and especially TV series is rapidly growing, there are specializations within the profession, for example:
Creator of the synopsis – a brief outline of the script, plot moves, which is written for the entire film or for an individual episode of the series.
Dialogue Developer – a person who writes the characters’ monologues and dialogues between them, focusing on the plot and the characters’ characters.
Plot Designer – based on the synopsis, he writes out the plot for the individual scenes.
Scenarios can be written by the author from scratch or based on existing literary works. In the second case, the scriptwriter has to adapt them for audiovisual perception, to break them into scenes, on the basis of which the episodes will be shot, and to describe each of them in detail.
The name of the profession is associated primarily with film production, but today the opportunities to apply the talent of creating interesting scripts have significantly expanded and are not limited to the film industry. Screenwriters are needed to create:
✔ Entertainment shows.
✔ Television shows.
✔ Commercials
✔ Mobile applications
Training programs on line
Even mass celebrations are not without writers, both private (e.g. writing scripts for corporate parties, weddings, anniversaries) and public – for example, the city.
Necessary qualities
The main quality that a screenwriter must have is writing talent, the ability to come up with and beautifully tell stories. However, this is not enough to be constantly in demand and successful.
A screenwriter also needs:
✎ Broad erudition and the ability to work with information. This is especially important if you are scripting a thematic product, such as a historical or “production” series (describing the work of members of a profession).
✎ Communication skills. Most of the scriptwriter performs alone or in collaboration with 1-2 colleagues. But he regularly has to communicate with the director, actors, experts acting as consultants. It may have to make changes or defend their point of view. For such communications to be constructive, you need to be able to communicate with all kinds of people.
✎organization and self-discipline. If the script is written to order, the author must meet deadlines and adhere to the deadlines specified in the contract.
✎ Analytical skills. The screenwriter has to research the facts, select the right ones and weed out the unreliable ones, conduct entire documentary studies in the process of working on the script.
